Aqra bil-Malti: Riċetta: Torta ħelwa tat-tut
Bees love circling this sweet fruit, but when I was a girl no one stopped me from climbing the mulberry tree that my uncle had at the back of his home, not even the bees.
Time: one hour and 15 minutes
Serves: 8 people
Ingredients:
- 100 g sugar
- 2 tablespoons corn flour
- 800 g fresh black mulberries
- 50 g butter, melted
For the topping:
- 300 g flour
- 300 g sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
- 450 ml milk
- 50 g butter, melted
Instructions:
- Heat the oven to a temperature of 175 ° C. Grease dish of 23 cm x 30 cm, or equivalent, with a little butter.
- Mix the 100 g of sugar and maize flour together in a bowl for later.
- Place the black mulberries in a bowl and pour on it 50 ml of melted butter, and spray the mixture of sugar and maize flour. Shake the black mulberries well to cool. Spread black mulberry mixture at the bottom of the dish.
- In a clean bowl, thoroughly mix the flour, baking powder, salt and 300 g sugar together. Pour on this mixture the milk, vanilla essence and 50 ml melted butter. Stir everything together (the solution remains slightly rough and lumpy) and spread over the fruit.
- Bake for about an hour or until you see that the surface has a golden colour.
- Serve cold or warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
