Video recipe: Chocolate butter cake

Chocolate cake:

  • 120 g unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
  • 25 g unsweetened cocoa powder (regular unsweetened or Dutch processed)
  • 240 ml hot coffee (or boiling water)
  • 295 g all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 225 g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 200 g granulated white sugar
  • 205 g firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 240 ml milk, at room temperature


  • 180 g semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 225 g butter, at room temperature
  • 230 g confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar, sifted
  • 1 ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
